Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam on Monday said that on an average about six lakh (0.6 millions) Bangladeshi migrant workers were going to work abroad every year.
Since the official record introduced in 1976, more than 11.6 million of Bangladeshi workers have so far migrated to some 165 countries across the world in search of overseas jobs, he said.
The minister made his written remarks at the national parliament in replying to the question of Pirojpur-3 MP Rustam Ali Faraji and Rajshahi-3 MP Ain Uddin.
Nurul Islam also said that the overseas employment from Bangladesh has reached the highest in number with over 10 lakh of workers in 2017 up from some 7.57 lakh workers migrated abroad in 2016.
He said that the recruiting agencies which were now sending workers abroad had taken their licenses from the governments authorized department. ‘Without endorsement of government, no recruiting agency can send workers abroad,’ he said.
