Bangladeshi Ovhibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA) has called upon the government of Bangladesh and international community to take necessary steps to protect the rights of all migrant workers including Bangladeshis.

On occasion of Great May Day 2021, BOMSA chairman Lily Jahan and its general secretary Sheikh Rumana made the calls, according to the organization.

BOMSA that has been dealing repatriation of some returnee migrants said that Bangladeshi migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Malaysia were facing various problems amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The organization also said that May Day every year arrives to remind the people that working people enjoy their rights properly. Migrant workers as the divers of development should have entitlement to enjoy specific working hours, get decent wages and find sound workplaces, BOMSA said.

BOMSA general secretary Sheikh Rumana said that Bangladeshi migrant workers especially the women domestic workers have been getting victims at every step.

She called upon the government and other stakeholders to protect the migrant domestic workers at home and in the destinations.

Rumana said that on this May Day she demanded that all migrant workers’ rights would be strongly protected everywhere.

She also demanded that the policymakers should change their mindset about the migrant workers who were greatly contributing to the national economy.

Marking the May Day, BOMSA will organize rally in front of National Press Club and take part in the discussions, she added.

The organization also holds different programs on May Day in Savar and Narsingdi district.

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on 1 May. In 1889, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago.

International Workers’ Day is also called “May Day”, but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day
