Malaysia to Announce New Policy on Recruiting Foreign Workers

Malaysia to Announce New Policy on Recruiting Foreign Workers ; The Malaysian Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran on Saturday said that his government would announce the new policy on recruitment of foreign workers next Tuesday.

Quoting Kulasegaran, Malaysian national news agency BERNAMA reported that the policy, which was more systematic, was formulated to ensure that the recruitment of foreign workers would be done in line with market demands.

‘The new policy will also ensure that the process to recruit and bring foreign workers into the country will be done transparently and according to the stipulated procedures.

‘We want a systematic policy because our target is to ensure that the employment of foreign workers will not exceed 15 per cent of the total workers in the country,’ he told reporters in Ipoh City.

Kulasegaran added that his ministry and the Ministry of Home Affairs would meet to discuss on the matter soon.

The meeting, which most likely to be chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is assuming the duties of Home Minister, will discuss, among others, the country’s need for foreign workers, the basis for it, and several proposed restrictions.

According to Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, Malaysia has started recruiting workers from Bangladesh 1978.

Over eight lakh Bangladeshis are currently working in Malaysia, according to officials of Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

As there are many Bangladeshi workers staying undocumented in Malaysia, they are passing days in the grave stress due to ongoing crackdown.
