Expatriates Welfare Ministry Budget Allocation Decreased

The government has proposed a decreased budget for the expatriates welfare and overseas employment ministry this year.

Only Tk 591 crore has been proposed for FY 2019-2020 though the government allocated Tk 595 crore in the outgoing year of FY 2018-2019, according to the budget speech.

Migration experts expressed their concern over reduction of budget for the EWOE ministry which was mandated to manage overseas migration and ensure welfare of the country’s migrants working abroad.

WARBE Development Foundation chairman Syed Saiful Haque said that the EWOE ministry had performed better in implementing its outgoing projects. ‘So the ministry deserves to get enhanced budget.’

He said that the government should bring migrants and their family members under social safety-net programmes considering their contribution to the economy.

OKUP chairman Shakirul Islam said that it was unfortunate to hear that the government reduced the budgetary allocation for the ministry of expatriate’s welfare, which would face problems in rendering welfare to the migrant workers.

He demanded special allocations for the affected migrant workers.

BNSK executive director Sumaiya Islam said that the government did not propose any allocation for the women migrant workers who were in distress in destination countries.
